Xiaomi has recently announced an extended software support policy that is garnering attention in the technology community. This policy aims to provide software support for some of its flagship devices for up to 6 years, positioning Xiaomi competitively alongside major players like Google and Samsung, and, in some aspects, even exceeding their offerings.
Under this new initiative, owners of select premium devices such as the Xiaomi 15, Xiaomi 15 Ultra, POCO F7 Pro, and POCO F7 Ultra can anticipate software updates until March 2031. Specifically, users will receive four years of major Android operating system upgrades and an additional two years of security patches. While not all users retain their devices for such an extended period, this commitment can enhance resale value and provide peace of mind for those considering passing the device along.
Xiaomi’s policy expansion is not limited to flagship models; many mid-range and high-end devices, like the Xiaomi 14T Pro (released in September 2024 with support until September 2029) and the Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G (launched in January 2025, supported until January 2029), will also receive up to five years of security updates, though major Android upgrades may not be guaranteed. This approach is a significant advancement, instilling greater confidence among users in these segments.
Additionally, the new Xiaomi Pad 7 and Pad 7 Pro tablets will be supported with updates until 2028. This broadening of support across Xiaomi’s product portfolio marks a positive shift in industry standards and sets new expectations for users regarding the lifespan of their devices.
Despite this promising initiative, some users remain cautious, questioning whether this is merely a marketing strategy. The challenge of consistently delivering over-the-air (OTA) updates across numerous models and markets is substantial, and while commitments have been made, the true test will be in Xiaomi’s ability to meet these expectations over time.
