Apple is set to introduce a new, budget-friendly MacBook model later this year, with an anticipated starting price of $599. This development was initially reported by industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in late June, indicating that the new 13-inch MacBook is designed to compete with Chromebook offerings and enhance overall MacBook sales.

The forthcoming MacBook will utilize the A18 Pro chip, which was first seen in last year’s iPhone 16 Pro, marking a significant shift as it will be the first Mac to incorporate an iPhone chip. Previously, all Mac models utilized M-series chips, known for their higher core counts and increased memory capabilities.

Kuo estimates that mass production of the new 13-inch MacBook will begin in late Q4 2025 or early Q1 2026. This timing is supported by additional insights from Digitimes, which notes that the starting price will fall between $599 and $699, making it substantially more affordable compared to the current 13-inch MacBook Air, which starts at $999, or $899 for students.

The new MacBook is expected to feature a 12.9-inch display, slightly smaller than the 13.6-inch display found on the MacBook Air. Some components are anticipated to enter mass production by the end of Q3, with full system assembly projected to start later this year. Final assembly is expected at Quanta’s facility in Q4, leading to a potential launch in late 2025 or early 2026.

Market estimates project that annual shipments of this low-cost MacBook could reach between 5 to 7 million units, potentially increasing total MacBook production from the current 17 to 18 million units by 30 to 40 percent. Kuo has also suggested that this new MacBook will feature an ultra-thin and lightweight design, with possible color options including silver, blue, pink, and gold.

It is important to note that the A18 Pro chip does not support Thunderbolt, which means the new MacBook may only include a standard USB-C port. However, this limitation may not significantly impact customers seeking a budget-friendly Mac option.
