Apple has officially released new updates: iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1, shortly after the earlier versions, iOS 18.6 and watchOS 11.6.

These new updates reintroduce the blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) measurement feature on Apple Watch models in the United States, following its suspension due to a legal dispute between Masimo and Apple. This legal conflict had previously led to the cessation of sales for the Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 models in late 2023. Although Apple resumed sales in early 2024, the SpO2 function remained inactive, posing challenges for users, particularly with device repairs.

The release of iOS 18.6.1 also includes numerous new health features. Apple announced that users can now access redesigned blood oxygen measurement capabilities by updating their iPhones to iOS 18.6.1 and their Apple Watches to watchOS 11.6.1. This updated feature collects and calculates data on the iPhone, with results accessible in the Breathing section of the Health app.

The reinstatement of the blood oxygen feature is promising for users, as it may pave the way for additional health functionalities in the future. A report from Bloomberg suggests that Apple plans to introduce a blood pressure monitoring feature in the upcoming Apple Watch Series 11, expected to launch next month alongside the iPhone 17. This forthcoming blood pressure technology is anticipated to operate similarly to the existing blood oxygen and sleep apnea monitoring features, providing alerts to users regarding potential health concerns based on the readings.

While these sensors have not received FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approval, such as that granted to ECG sensors, users can still utilize the Apple Watch to monitor their health.
