Apple recently announced the release of its iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 software updates, generating excitement among many users. Traditionally, Apple has been known for its extended support of hardware, but the introduction of new operating systems signals the end of support for certain older iPhone and iPad models.

At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, Apple unveiled the list of devices compatible with iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, revealing that several older models will no longer receive updates. Unlike last year, when all iPhones that could upgrade to iOS 17 were also eligible for iOS 18, this year introduces a change, as three older iPhone models—the iPhone Xr, Xs, and Xs Max—will not receive the iOS 26 update.

The compatible iPhone models for iOS 26 include:

  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  • SE (2nd and 3rd generation)
  • iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16e

It’s important to note that the iPhone Xr, Xs, and Xs Max are now seven years old, making the decision to end support for these models somewhat expected. However, Apple will continue to provide security updates for older, unsupported iPhones to ensure users remain protected, even without access to the latest iOS features.

In addition to the iOS updates, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 lineup this fall, reportedly including the iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and the anticipated iPhone 17e, all likely to come pre-installed with iOS 26.

For iPad users, the 7th-generation iPad will also not be eligible for the upgrade to iPadOS 26. Most iPad models running iPadOS 18 can update to iPadOS 26, which includes the following models:

  • iPad Pro M4, iPad Pro 11-inch
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation or newer)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation or newer)
  • iPad mini (5th generation or newer)
  • iPad (8th generation or newer)

This update cycle marks a significant transition for users of older Apple devices, shaping the landscape for future software capabilities and device compatibility.
