Meta has officially launched a dedicated version of WhatsApp for iPad, marking an important step in its cross-platform strategy to cater to the needs of millions of iPad users worldwide. This long-awaited release is now available for download from the App Store after several years of anticipation.
The iPad version of WhatsApp features a complete redesign tailored for the device’s larger screen. It includes a two-column layout that allows users to view their chat list alongside message content, facilitating easy navigation between conversations, similar to the experience found in email applications.
In terms of functionality, WhatsApp on the iPad supports group voice and video calls involving up to 32 participants. It also includes features like screen sharing and the ability to switch between front and rear cameras, all while ensuring end-to-end encryption, consistent with the iPhone version. The app is designed to leverage iPadOS multitasking features, such as Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over, enhancing the user experience. Compatibility with accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil further improves typing and interaction.
Users can link up to four devices, including multiple iPads, to their WhatsApp account. This capability allows them to use WhatsApp independently on their tablets while maintaining access to their chat history as they do on their phones. Additionally, similar to Messenger, the app includes a security feature that allows users to lock their chats with a PIN or facial recognition, offering privacy for those who share their device.
Following the introduction of WhatsApp for iPad, Meta is expected to soon roll out iPad versions of its other social networking applications. Reports in April indicated that an iPad-specific version of Instagram is in development.
Previously, iPad users were limited to accessing WhatsApp via a web version or had to rely on unofficial apps that provided a subpar experience. Launching the official WhatsApp application for iPad solidifies Meta’s commitment to expanding its presence across various devices and enhancing user accessibility.
